The Ultimate Madeira Packing List

Don’t get caught in the clouds. How to pack for Madeira’s 20+ microclimates.

Madeira is famous for its stunning landscapes, but it is equally famous for its unpredictable weather. You can easily sunbathe in a t-shirt in sunny Funchal, and find yourself shivering in a misty rainforest at Fanal an hour later. Based on our year of living here, we compiled the essential gear at Decathlon you actually need to stay comfortable, safe, and dry.

THE ADVENTURE LAYER

Waterproof Hiking Shoes

Madeira’s levadas can be muddy, slippery, and constantly wet from waterfalls. A sturdy pair of waterproof hiking shoes with good grip is your number one safety asset.

THE ADVENTURE LAYER

Headlamp (for Tunnels!)

Our ultimate insider tip. Many Levada walks feature pitch-black tunnels up to 1 kilometer long. A smartphone flashlight will not cut it, and you want to keep your hands free.

THE ADVENTURE LAYER

Backpack (20L – 30L)

You will be taking layers off and putting them back on all day. A comfortable backpack with proper back ventilation is essential to carry your gear, water, and snacks.

THE MICROCLIMATE SHIELD

Lightweight Rain & Wind Jacket

When hiking up to Pico do Arieiro or walking through the high plains, the wind can be biting and rain clouds can roll in within minutes. Pack a softshell jacket that is 100% wind- and waterproof.

THE MICROCLIMATE SHIELD

Compact & Warm Fleece Vest

As you drive or hike to higher altitudes, the temperature can suddenly drop by 10°C (18°F). A compact fleece takes up almost no space in your bag but keeps you warm when the mist hits. Must have.

THE MICROCLIMATE SHIELD

Stainless Steel Water Bottle

Staying hydrated during long coastal walks is key. A double-walled stainless steel bottle keeps your water crisp and cold, even when walking in the blazing sun. We recommend a size of 1 liter.

THE SUN PROTECTION LAYER

High SPF Sunscreen (50+)

The Atlantic breeze can feel cooling, but the sun is incredibly powerful here—especially at higher altitudes above the clouds. Always protect your skin with sport-proof sunscreen.

THE SUN PROTECTION LAYER

Swim / UV-protective shirt

Even a better option that being always busy with greasy sunscreen. We bought ours in bright colors so we could easily find our kids when they were playing on the beach.

THE SUN PROTECTION LAYER

Sports Cap or Sun Hat

Many trails, like the famous Ponta de São Lourenço, offer absolutely zero shade. A lightweight, breathable cap protects you from sunstrokes during long exposures.
