PR1 – Vereda do Areeiro
The most famous trail of Madeira between two peaks: Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo. Expect big crowds.

Mountains, views above the clouds and some tunnels.
Safety
Recently (spring ’26) this hike is reopened again for public after renovations. Paths and fences are upgraded and safe.
Parking & Logistics
There are two parking lots, P1 at the top and P2 a bit lower. P1 is more expensive but if you park at P2 you need to walk about 20 minutes to reach the start. When we did the trail it was only one-way. So we needed to get a taxi back (15 euro pp). This will change again in the course of 2026. Book your slot via this link.
What to Pack for This Hike
