Destinations: Finding Your Soul on the Island

Madeira is small, but its microclimates make every region feel like a different country. Here is where you should base yourself.

The Wild North

Key towns: São Vicente & Santana
The Vibe: Dramatic cliffs, lush greens, and moody mist. It feels like Hawaii.
Insider Tip: “This is our favorite part of the island. Wild, pure, the true Madeira. Go to Poço dos Namorados in Boaventura for a swim, a true hidden gem waterfall!”
Best for: Surfing, deep forest hikes, and peace.

The Dramatic East

Key towns: Machico & Caniçal
The Vibe: Traditional, close to the airport, and the starting point of the PR11.
Insider Tip: “In Caniçal there a lesser know black sand beach called Prainha do Caniçal, it’s perfect for a day at the beach with kids.”
Best for: History, sand beaches, and coastal walks.

The Golden West

Key towns: Calheta & Porto Moniz
The Vibe: Rural, quiet, and stunning ocean views.
Insider Tip: “Close to Ponta do Pargo is a lesser know waterfall called Garganta Funda. It’s great to see in combination with the cliffs and ocean views.”
Best for: Modern villas, levada starts, and sunsets.

The Sunny South

Key towns: Funchal & Ponta do Sol
The Vibe: High sun probability and the best infrastructure.
Insider Tip: “Funchal is great, but for the true local ‘gold coast’ experience, look at Ponta do Sol. Here’s also the start of one of our favorite hikes Levada do Moinho & Nova.”
Best for: Restaurants, easy logistics, and swimming.
