PR8 – Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço
This is a one of a kind hike in Madeira. Red soil, cacti, limited vegetation. A mix of the Grand Canyon and the Scottish Highlands. A must-visit.

🥾 Solo / Couple Score: 8.0 / 10
“This hike offers a unique landscape and view of the island”
What to Expect on the Trail
As the east part of the island has a complete different landscape than the other parts, this is a great hike to include in your itinerary.
Safety
Paths are wide but because of erosion some stairs are demolished and can be hard to complete.
Parking & Logistics
At the start there’s a big parking lot, but that gets packed quickly. So arrive early morning. Especially in the summer as there’s no shade, better to hike before the sun gets too powerful. Book your slot here.
What to Pack for This Hike
Solid hiking boots, clothing in layers, sunscreen, a hat, a water bottle and a backpack with snacks / food. Check out our Ultimate Madeira Packing List.
